Exploring Swedish wool for a sustainable future

Sweden imports over 1,700 tonnes of wool each year, while much of its own wool goes to waste. Through The Swedish Wool Initiative, we are exploring how Swedish wool can become a sustainable furniture filling, testing its performance as a natural alternative to synthetic materials.

Together with the initiative, we used swedish wool in our chair Rare—a natural choice, since it is already crafted from residual wood. We conducted tests on fire safety, durability, and moisture handling to understand the potential and limitations of wool as a sustainable filling in public environments. Rare was also celebrated for its sustainability efforts, Sustainability Project of the Year award at the Stockholm Furniture Fair 2023.

At the recent final seminar, we had the opportunity to see how different companies approached Swedish wool in design. It was inspiring to share experiences, collaborate, and highlight creativity across the industry.

For us at NC, this is one step in our journey. Every choice—from wood and textiles to finishes—reflects our commitment to creating lasting, sustainable furniture as we continue to explore, experiment, and evolve.

Thank you for your guidance and collaboration with Axfoundation and The Swedish Wool Project.
